It is an alternative proof-of-work or PoW algorithm to the SHA-256 and is used in Bitcoin mining. The scrypt mining depends more heavily on memory than on the pure CPU power. It aims to reduce the advantage that the ASICs possess and thus increase network participation as well as energy efficiency.
