It is the act of investing in an asset possessing a high risk and reward ratio. If you are taking risks as you are expecting that you will gain more than what you actually invest, then you are actually engaging in speculative investments. When Bitcoin had been released, it was unclear if it was required. But it became very popular today. When people experienced the potential that the crypto coin carried, then they started launching more projects on the blockchain.
