 X16R is the hashing algorithm designed, formulated, and employed by the Ravencoin blockchain network. X16R was constructed to decrease the centralization of application-centric integrated circuit (ASIC) mining in the blockchain area. ASIC miners are specialized and expensive computer hardware that many believe make the process  of mining more profitable for industrial-scale functions and leave retail miners behind. Thus, X16R was formulated by Ravencoin as a Proof of Work (PoW) alternative that is more resistant to centralization.
