A z-address is a ‘shielded,’ or privacy protected Zcash address. Transactions among one z-address and another do not reveal the addresses of the parties, the amount of transaction, or the contents of the transaction’s memo field on the blockchain. A z-address uses zero-knowledge proof cryptography to attain these features. z-addresses are interoperable with transparent z-cash addresses, which showcase the addresses of the transacting parties, amount of transaction, and the contents of the transaction’s memo field.
